When readers pick up 'Rapture', the award-winning seventh novel by acclaimed author Emily Maguire, they’re immediately immersed in the world of 9th century Europe.
But there’s a little bit of modern-day life at the ANU within those pages too.
Maguire worked on 'Rapture', which recently won the Queensland Literary Award for best work of fiction, as an HC Coombs Creative Arts Fellow with Arts & Social Sciences at ANU.
The Fellowship allowed Maguire to live and work on campus for three months and “go really deep” on her historical novel, which is inspired by the story of Pope Joan.
Emily Maguire will be discussing her brilliant novel on Saturday 25 October at a Canberra Writers Festival event at the National Portrait Gallery, in conversation with local author Tabitha Carvan.

It's #BirdOfTheYear time, and we're backing the gorgeous, yet goofy, gang-gang this year!
You can spot this charismatic, small cockatoo flitting about tree canopies of ANU Acton campus. Or, even more likely, hear its signature creaky-door croak calling out.
Researchers at ANU Fenner School of Environment & Society are currently studying our local gang-gangs. They're using citizen-science-collected feathers to sample DNA, as well as monitoring gang-gang breeding behaviours.
Whether the gang-gang takes the title of the Guardian Australia 2025 Bird of the Year or not, we're happy to champion this awesome native bird that calls our campus home! It's #BirdOfTheYear time, and we're backing the gorgeous, yet goofy, gang-gang this year! First Nations people have been given a seat at the table to shape Australia's future economic policy through a historic agreement recently signed by the Federal Government.
“The economic self‑determination of Indigenous peoples has received little attention, and our communities have never been given a chance to shape our own economic futures," said Professor Peter Yu, First Nations Economic Empowerment Alliance Chair and ANU Vice-President (First Nations).
"Today that changes.”
