In 2023, accidental drug overdoses took the lives of 1,768 Australians - more than the number lost on our roads. That's why the Australian-first testing technology and surveillance research emerging from UTS: University of Technology Sydney is so important. Led by Associate Professor Marie Morelato, researchers at the UTS Centre for Forensic Science are using innovative tools like the MicroNIR handheld device to detect traces of illicit drugs in used syringes - providing real-time insights that can help reduce harm and save lives.
