We chatted to Professor Katarina Miljkovic from our School of Earth and Planetary Sciences about our new Bachelor of Science (Space and Planetary Science) course. 1. What excites you most about the new course? This is the first time any Australian university will offer planetary sciences at undergraduate level! I’m excited to start teaching space exploration, origins of life, geosciences off world, and space missions—alongside current units like remote sensing and Earth observation. We need more courses like this to grow STEM expertise in the industry. 2. How does this course prepare students for real-world careers in space and planetary research? Students will learn about everything from Earth observation (including satellite communication, positioning, and remote sensing) to space missions and exploration on the Moon and Mars, including the scientific and technical requirements behind these endeavours. They’ll gain transferable STEM skills while having fun! 3. What kind of student do you think will thrive in this course? One who is curious and a keen space explorer. Someone with an innate desire to learn about our origins and our place in the Solar System.
